For non-profits

Interim and C-suite leadership when it matters most.

44 Fractional provides interim and fractional C-suite leadership for non-profits and foundations. Founder Alex Bornstein brings 30 years as a non-profit leader, including Executive Director, CEO, COO and CFO roles. I step in to steady the organization, keep the mission moving and leave it stronger for whoever comes next.

Results

What changed.

Fractional COO · 6-Month Engagement · US-Based Social Services Non-Profit
$350K/yr

In six months: saved $350K a year, resolved 13 material audit findings and cut staff turnover from 3% to zero.

Situation. A poor audit exposed lax controls, wasted spending and low morale at a $10M organization whose CEO was stretched thin by fundraising.

What I did. Ran a four-week review of every finance and operations system, then served six months as fractional COO: revised internal controls, replaced the accounting firm, cut ineffective vendors, subscriptions and insurance, and recruited a permanent COO.

Project-Based COO · 12-Week Engagement · US-Based Food Rescue Non-Profit
+22%

Fundraising up 22% quarter over quarter once the founder and CEO had 10 hours a week back. Food volume rose 12%, and staff gained an average of 5 hours a week each.

Situation. The founder and CEO was buried in day-to-day work, burning out, and fundraising was trending down.

What I did. Expanded a four-week review into a 12-week project: new finance approval workflows, faster food pickup routes that improved store partner relations, better use of volunteers, and an interactive employee handbook that clarified roles and lifted morale.

Fractional and Project-Based COO · Education Non-Profit
$5M raised

In seven months, at 10 hours a week, built the organization that let the founder raise $5M, and recruited its Executive Director.

Situation. A serial entrepreneur wanted a non-profit to complement his for-profit education business, starting with $250K in seed funding.

What I did. Incorporated the organization; set up its bank accounts, systems and 5 service providers; wrote 10 policies and a full board onboarding packet; and recruited the Executive Director, with a long-term hiring plan.

  • A leadership gap opens during an executive search
  • Finances, audits or controls need urgent attention
  • Rapid growth outpaces systems and staff
  • A merger, restructuring or wind-down
  • A new leader needs a strong operating partner
